Achievements 2018 – 2019

Highlights for ABSLTA’s achievements in 2018 - 2019

  • Amazing seeing ABSLTA progress to its 29th Anniversary as it is run entirely by volunteers.
  • The 29th AGM and workshops in Cardiff were really amazing as Stephen Doughty,  Cardiff South and Penarth MP attended in recognition of BSL Teachers in the UK. Great news that he accepted our request to become patron for ABSLTA. Hugest thanks to Sue Hawkins, for interpreting beautifully between Stephen and BSL Teachers.
  • The new executive committee now hails from Wales, Scotland and North England and did some hard work, especially Stuart Parkinson, our researcher.
  • Jill, our amazing new Secretary and did the minutes regularly.
  • Gillian Stringer and Ashley Clifford worked hard to improve our membership offer and numbers.
  • Caroline Hurley, the website developer was supportive and patient with us dealing with some technical issues with the ABSLTA website.
  • Silvana Lennon, the new ABSLTA Scottish committee leader is making great efforts to promote our  networking with Scottish BSL Teachers. It is important for them because of BSL (Scotland) Act.
  • Stuart, Jill and Emma met Jim Fitzpatrick, the Lambeth MP last summer about our concern about the lack of BSL teaching courses because of the GCSE in BSL. He was very keen to listen carefully and gave us his advice on how to lobby our local constituency MPs.
  • Wonderful seeing Richard Carter’s Teaching  Receptive Productive Workshops and fantastic seeing his visual interactive resource using PowerPoint without any English sentences.
  • The executive committees members had our trustee training day in Cardiff which helped us build our teamwork and gave ABSLTA a more professional direction.
  • Great news that Clark Denmark has agreed to be our president for ABSLTA as a lot of BSL Teachers highly respected his skills and experience.
  • We are really blessed for Janice Crossland-Jones that Merseyside Society for Deaf People centre in Liverpool offered us to use their Deaf Centre on Friday 10th May evening and on Saturday 11th May 2019 for our ABSLTA 30th Anniversary! We are looking forward to see ABSLTA grow in strength and further support BSL Teachers and Assessors!
  • We welcome and encourage any trainee teachers, BSL teachers, assessors, verifiers, and retired teachers to join and support ABSLTA with networking opportunities
