Jill Hipson

Jill Hipson - Secretary of ABSLTAHello!  I’m the Secretary and Newsletter editor.  I’ve been editing Newsletters for many years and  edit newsletters for other organisations.  Secretary is a new job and I started at the 2017 AGM.

My world is visual, with no sound at all.  I’ve been deaf since I was 5, due to meningitis, and don’t wear hearing aids or have a CI.  I went to a boarding school for deaf children.

My degree is in English Literature; I graduated from Durham University in 1984.  I worked as a computer programmer with BT for some years but got problems with my arms and back and had to stop working.  After that I decided to become an adult education teacher, did my teacher training and achieved City and Guilds 2407 parts 1 and 2.  I achieved Level 6 BSL in December 2016.

I started teaching in 2002, at first it was Deaf Awareness then I started teaching BSL as well.  I’m now teaching Levels 1 to 3 as a freelance teacher at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.  I also freelance for an online BSL teaching firm called BSL Courses, teaching Level 1 through Skype tutorials.
